Keeping company with Matilda of Canossa… In the Footsteps of Kathleen McGowan’s Novel: The Book of Love

Let’s walk in the footsteps of the main character, Maureen Paschal whose story intertwines with that of a famous 11th century woman: the “warrior” countess Matilda of Canossa.

We will follow the chapter in which Matilda arrives in Lucca with her father Bonifacio, and will admire, through her eyes, the Church of San Frediano, the Cathedral of San Martino and San Giovanni.

These were the places that fascinated Matilda and still today are the symbols of our town. The Volto Santo (Holy Face), the Labyrinth, and much more await you in what will be a captivating visit of a mysterious Lucca.

If you have an entire day at your disposal, we can prolong the mystery and also visit Borgo a Mozzano where the famous Ponte del Diavolo (Devil’s Bridge) is located.
