The Villas and Romanesque Churches of Lucca and the “Hidden” Leonardo da Vinci
Shore Excursions from the Ports of Livorno/Viareggio/La Spezia
This itinerary offers the best of what the countryside of Lucca has to offer: food and wine, scenery, and art.
The majestic architectural beauty of the villas (large country homes) of Lucca contrasts with the surrounding elegant and austere Romanesque churches that, until recently, have hidden incredibly important and beautiful works of art.
The tour takes you through the luxuriant green hills of Lucca covered with olive groves and vineyards, an incomparable agrarian landscape that offers stupendous vistas and the possibility of sampling the products that this fertile area produces in abundance.
The gardens, park, and interior of Villa Torrigiani of Camigliano will be visited. This is perhaps the best example among the multitude of villas in Lucca where the beauty of its formal gardens and natural park harmonizes with the pomp and splendor of the Baroque style.
Next, located in the adjacent hills, we will go to the charming village of San Gennaro that offers a breathtaking panorama. Its Romanesque church conserves a beautiful terracotta statue of an Annunciatory angel. It is wholly intact and is considered to be the only sculpture of Leonardo da Vinci in existence.
The final stop will be at a splendid villa constructed in the mid-16th century. It is typical of the architectural style of the time, an elegant and sober building set in the highest part of the village where a military defense fortress once stood. The interior has managed to preserve most of its 19th – early 20th century décor. The tastings of traditional and local quality products will take place in the cellars which are hollowed out of the rock where the residence stands.
