The Walls of Lucca and the River Park
The Serchio River flows a few hundred meters from the city walls and is specially protected by a park with a bike path that runs alongside the river. The route is trouble-free and absolutely suitable for everyone, especially families. It is unsurfaced but easy-going even for city bikes.
With one of our local specialized guides, you will begin by riding on the walls of Lucca, completing the entire circuit. It is a pleasant and easy ride on a paved pedestrian-and bike path that runs atop the fortification, the best preserved in Italy. The walls also offer delightful views of palazzos, towers, and gardens of one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany.
After having completed the “classic” 4.5 km circuit of the walls, you will ride along the city bike lane towards the River Park. Using the left bank path, you will reach Ponte San Pietro cycling through a lush landscape (7 km).
As an alternative, you can leave the river bed and cycle 2 km of asphalt road to the medieval hamlet of Nozzano Castello. After cycling around the outside perimeter of the village, you will head back to the River Park and return by the right bank path to Piazza Santa Maria in Lucca (9 km).
Upon your return, it is possible to add a tasting of Tuscan wines and sampling of local products or a snack.
