San Piero a Grado
A few kilometres from Pisa ,on the way to the sea is the most ancient Christian architecture in Pisa.
Legend has it that this was the first Italian port where S Peter disembarked on his journey to Rome.
In the early Christian era san Piero a Grado was one of the most important ports.
Meeting with the guide and visit to the church:
-Outside, with the typical Islamic and Spanish ceramic decorations dating back to the Middle Ages. Worth seeing are the 3 very interesting apses
-Inside, we can see the 14th century frescoes representing all the Roman popes painted by the Lucchese Deodato Orlandi for the Jubilee in the year 1300
-Archaeological ruins, the ruins, which can be seen inside the church, clearly show the pre-existing structures to the Romanesque basilica. They date back to the Roman, early Christian and late Medieval periods
