Castella pesciatine
In the valley north of Pescia, there are old fortified villages of Le Castella. The unspoiled natural lush green landscape in which they are set reminded the Swiss historian, Sismondi, of his homeland Switzerland. For this reason, he named the area “Svizzera Pesciatina” (Swiss Pescia).
Meet the guide and visit:
– Pietrabuona, characteristic village, important for its strategic position. It houses the “Documentation Center of Paper Manufacturing” where it is possible to see how paper was manufactured through the centuries.
– Fibbialla
– Aramo
– San Quirico, with its piazza, loggia and a 9th-century church, is truly worth a visit.
– Castelvecchio, the church of Saints Giovanni Battista and Tommaso is one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture in the Valdinievole
– Vellano, the most important fortification of Swiss Pescia. Its structure is said to have inspired Dante for the writing of his Purgatory in the Divine Comedy.
