This tour takes you through the heart of Garfagnana with its green valleys and majestic mountains. You will admire the incomparable beauty of the Alpi Apuane, the mountains from which Carrara marble is extracted, medieval villages, and Romanesque churches surrounded by centuries-old sweet chestnut tree forests.

ITINERARY

  • Depart from Lucca, travel north alongside the Serchio River with a short stop at the famous medieval Ponte del Diavolo, the Devil’s Bridge, near the town of Borgo a Mozzano.
  • Visit the Romanesque church of Loppia.
  • Continue to Barga, a stupendous medieval, hilltop town that dominates the valley. You will walk through its narrow streets up to the imposing Romanesque Duomo built in the 11th From here, enjoy a spectacular view of the valley and mountains.
  • Visit the fortified village of Castiglione Garfagnana, which was the last stronghold of Lucca against northern invaders, or alternatively, visit the administrative heart of Garfagnana, the town of Castelnuovo.
