San Piero a Grado
A few kilometres from Pisa ,on the way to the sea is the most ancient Christian architecture in Pisa.
Legend has it that this was the first Italian port where S Peter disembarked on his journey to Rome.
In the early Christian era san Piero a Grado was one of the most important ports.
Meeting with the guide and visit to the church:
–Outside, with the typical Islamic and Spanish ceramic decorations dating back to the Middle Ages. Worth seeing are the 3 very interesting apses
–Inside, we can see the 14th century frescoes representing all the Roman popes painted by the Lucchese Deodato Orlandi for the Jubilee in the year 1300
–Archaeological ruins, the ruins, which can be seen inside the church,clearly show the pre-existing structures to the Romanesque basilica. They date back to the Roman, early Christian and late Medieval periods
